Lucid Reality

Lucid Reality is the working title I've given to one of the ideas chosen by my survey participants. The initial idea is as follows:

'
The story of an addict who abuses sleeping pills to escape into their dreams. As the highs wear off, the addict's problems begin to seep into the dreams, manifesting as nightmares. The story revolves around this persons' fight to overcome their issues and break the cycle of addiction.'

For each of my three ideas, I'll be running through what I believe to be the most developmental and essential headings of the project proposal at this stage.

I'll be approaching these in the future tense, as I won't have conducted all the research and prototyping yet, so this is more to outline what I
will be doing as opposed to what I have already done - I'll then add to this as I progress.
 Initial Abstract

"500-1000 word synopsis to include description of the general project and reasons for choice.

  • Introduce it, describe it.

  • What is your research so far?

  • Provide key examples of visual research"

Lucid Reality will be a psychologically based action game in which the player assumes the role of an addict who is hooked on a substance called Dream Serum. Dream Serum and the Dream Aid are two pieces of technology designed to assist individuals in having a better quality of dreams, having made massive benefits to the lives of those suffering with recurring nightmares.

As the protagonist abuses the Dream Aid and Dream Serum, the highs wear off. Their trauma begins to intrude once again on their dreams, causing massive negative effects on their mental state. Having run out of options, the protagonist finds it in themselves to confront their trauma head on, engaging in fierce combat and movement sequences that are both difficult and strategic.

User Experience: Critical Analysis

"An indication of the critical and analytical framework and key research sources for the project include how your believe your project will be supported by these.

  • What are the topics you researching specifically that are not games related?

  • Key academic books/ journals/ articles"

My research into dreams and psychology has provided me with a very strong basis to approach this game idea. There are a few areas however that I want to solidify in particular, such as neuro and biochemistry, since this will allow me to better inform my decisions when making concepts for the DreamAid and Dream Serum.

Design Appendix: Concepts

"Concepts of preliminary designs for visual aspects of your project. Examples of screen layouts, characters, graphics, moodboard’s and colours etc in digital formats.

  • include tests and test reflection

    • iterations and feedback

    • models/ sprite sheets"

The main piece of concepting work I carry out will be for the DreamAid - I want to really flesh out and design a piece of technology that really sets the tone for the game.

Design Appendix: Prototypes

" Create and list self-contained functional components and early prototypes you expect to make should be listed and eventually linked here.

  • list out initial ideas

    • Paper prototypes ?

    • Simple mechanics concepts ?

    • Can you embed? "

I will most likely be heading into Minecraft to create prototypes for Lucid Reality - the focus will be mostly on entering the dreamscapes via sleep, using the dreamaid, how the protgaonists trauma manifests within the dreams, and how the player interacts with the world.
